About Us

The Aerospace Pharmacy and Pharmacology Group (APPG) is a thematic group within the International Society of Gravitational Physiology.
Launched in 2025, the APPG builds on the work of the ESA Topical Team on Pharmacological Countermeasures (2021–2024) and aims to advance the field of aerospace pharmacy and pharmacology.
Our overall mission is to provide a platform for collaborative exchange, research, education, clinical practice, and advocacy focused on the safe and effective use of pharmaceuticals in aerospace, microgravity, and extreme environments.

Vision & Mission of the thematic group

Vision: The international reference in pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences applied to spaceflight and aviation.

Mission: To advance evidence-based pharmacological knowledge and pharmaceutical practices that support the health, performance, and safety of astronauts and other professionals in aerospace-related activities.

Objectives

  • Promote the advancement of pharmaceutical use in the aerospace environment by fostering international collaboration, education, innovation, practice, and research.
  • To serve as a leading advocate for the exchange of knowledge and innovation in the safe and effective use of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical-related technologies, supporting professionals engaged in aerospace pharmacy
  • Represent the discipline of pharmacy/pharmacology within ISGP and the wider aerospace medicine community.
  • Encourage young investigators and multidisciplinary participation.

Activities

  • Monthly virtual meetings with research updates, guest speakers, and thematic discussions.
  • Dedicated plenary and panel sessions at the ISGP Congress.
  • Outreach and education: webinars and networking opportunities.
  • Research focus areas: pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics in space, pharmaceutical stability, countermeasure development, medical kits for exploration missions, regulations, and pharmacy practice aboard the ISS.
